18 Art Prints for Living Room

Do you spend most of your time in the living room? Do you go there to relax, read a good book, or drink a grass of wine sitting on your favorite chair? Do you receive your guests in the living room where you catch up with them over a cocktail?

If any of those are true, chances are you are spending a good amount of your time in the living room. Need a bit of sprucing up? Then consider adding some wall art in the living room.

There are a few things to consider when choosing wall art for a living room—placement, sizing, and number of pieces. You may be wondering where is a good place to add wall art in your living room. There are a few suitable spots in the living room where wall art will improve your space for relaxation. A single art print placed anywhere would not make a good statement. Look for another design element such as furniture and install your art in proximity.

Above a Sofa

For example, one easy place to add living room wall art is above the sofa. The sofa will bring attention to your wall art. Regardless of the size of your living room and sofa, you can go with a large piece. Anything with dimensions above 20 inches width would work well.

Also, you can choose a combination of more than 1 prints, in which case you would reduce the size of the prints.

Above a Fireplace

If your living room has one, above the fireplace is another excellent placement for wall art. The fireplace will help bring attention and focus to the art print. I recommend 1 to 2 pieces of wall art for this placement.

Between 2 Windows

Sometimes you have a tiny bit of wall between 2 windows which is another great spot for wall art. The windows "frame" the space where your art will be installed. 1 piece of wall art would be ideal for this placement.

Between a Window and a Door

The space between a window and a door is also a perfect spot for wall art in the living room. 1 piece of wall art would be ideal for this placement.

For those who can't decide where, there are alternative placements for art prints without making holes in the wall.

Placed on a Side Table or Shelves

You can place the pieces on a side table. That way you can move them often if you wish. An alternative would be to install 1 or 2 single shelves and place your wall art there instead of hanging it. The sizes of these can be all different, as long as they don't differ too much in height. A 3x3in piece next to a 10x10in piece, that would not look very harmonious.

On the Floor

If you have a very tall piece you can place it on the floor. Make sure that you can see it eye level and if you can't it means it's too small and you need to hang it or shelf it.

Sizing and Number of Pieces

The size of your art will depend on the number of pieces and vice versa. It will also depend on the size of the placement wall. As a general rule an art piece's width should be at least 1/3 of the width of the placement wall and no more than 2/3. Or if your wall is 9 feet wide, then your art piece should be 3 feet wide or more. This doesn't have to be exact but staying close to these dimensions will help.

If you have 2 pieces for the same wall, the total width of both pieces should be 3 to 6 feet. You can install 2 pieces each 2.5 feet wide and leave about 5 inches between them.

Landscapes

An abstract print of a sky by Elisabeth Fredriksson, will look beautiful in large format in a contemporary or modern living room. A more realistic misty mountain print by SpaceFrogDesign offers a nice contrast. Pick this canvas print if you are looking for a gentle sunrise in pastel colors by the same artist. If you like desert views, this canvas print brings a lot of serenity and tranquility, also by the same artist.
